Masseter Botox in New Berlin, WI Jaw Slimming & TMJ Relief

Masseter Botox uses neurotoxin injections to relax the large chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. As the muscle softens and gradually reduces in size, two things happen at once: the jawline narrows into a softer, more oval shape, and the force behind teeth grinding and jaw clenching drops significantly. Performed by our RN injectors at A-Class Aesthetics in New Berlin — minutes from Milwaukee, Brookfield, and Waukesha.

What Is Masseter Botox
The Basics

What Is Masseter Botox? The Muscle, the Mechanism, the Result

The masseter is the thick, powerful chewing muscle that runs from your cheekbone down to the angle of your jaw. Relative to its size it's one of the strongest muscles in the human body — and like any muscle, it grows larger with repeated heavy use. Years of clenching, grinding, or even chewing gum can build it into a visibly wider, more square lower face.

Masseter Botox works by relaxing that muscle. With less force available to contract, the masseter gradually reduces in size the same way any under-used muscle does — and as it shrinks, the jawline narrows and softens.

That single mechanism produces two outcomes at once: a slimmer, more oval lower face, and real relief from the grinding and clenching that built the muscle in the first place. Patients who came in purely for jaw slimming often report their morning jaw soreness disappeared as a bonus — and patients treating TMJ symptoms frequently notice their jawline slimming without having asked for it.

How It Works — Step by Step
1
Palpation and mapping. Your injector has you clench so the masseter becomes visible and palpable, then maps its size, shape, and borders — which differ meaningfully between patients.
2
Placement into the muscle body. Product is placed deep into the belly of the masseter across 4–6 points per side — deliberately away from the muscles controlling your smile.
3
Clenching force drops. Within 1–2 weeks the muscle can no longer contract at full strength. Grinding and clenching relief typically arrives in this window.
4
The muscle reduces. Over the following weeks reduced use leads to genuine volume loss in the muscle. This is why slimming takes 8–12 weeks — you're waiting on actual muscle change, not a surface effect.
Product Selection

We slightly prefer Daxxify for masseter treatment. It spreads less than Dysport, letting us concentrate the effect inside the masseter without reaching the adjacent muscles that control your smile — and its 5–6 month duration means longer relief between appointments. That said, the choice is case-by-case based on your anatomy and Aspire rewards status.

The Honest Candidacy Question

Masseter Botox slims muscle — it cannot change bone. If your jaw width comes primarily from a wide bony structure rather than an enlarged muscle, the change will be modest no matter how many units are used. If your width comes from muscle hypertrophy built by years of clenching, the result can be genuinely dramatic. Most people are somewhere in between, and we'll tell you honestly where you fall at your assessment — including when we think the result won't justify the cost.

Strongest results: patients with visible muscle bulging at the jaw angle when they clench, a history of grinding or clenching, and a lower face that appears wider than the upper face.
Good results: patients with moderate muscle development who want subtle refinement rather than dramatic change, and patients whose primary goal is therapeutic relief with slimming as a welcome side effect.
Limited results: patients whose jaw width is skeletal. We can still treat clenching and TMJ symptoms effectively — the therapeutic benefit is real — but the visible contour change will be minimal.
How we assess it: your injector palpates the muscle while you clench and release. A masseter that visibly bulges and feels dense under the fingers responds well. One that barely changes between clenched and relaxed indicates the width is structural.
Results build over multiple rounds. First treatment produces visible change; the second and third produce more as the muscle has longer without full-strength use. Patients treating consistently often need fewer units over time.

PAYMENT PLANS FOR MASSETER BOTOX

Two Reasons to Consider Masseter Botox
Two Patient Journeys

Two Reasons to Consider It One Treatment, Two Very Different Goals

Patients arrive at masseter Botox from two completely different directions — one looking in the mirror, one waking up with a sore jaw. Both are treated with the same injection, and both usually get the other benefit whether they asked for it or not.

01
Aesthetic Goal

Jaw Slimming & Face Shape

If your lower face reads wider or more square than you'd like — particularly if it looks disproportionate to your cheekbones — an enlarged masseter is frequently the reason. Reducing it narrows the jaw angle and shifts the overall face shape toward a softer oval or heart shape.

The change is subtle to moderate, not surgical. It's the kind of result people notice without being able to name — you look more refined, not different.

You might be a candidate if
Your face looks rounder or wider in photos than it feels
You can feel a hard bulge at your jaw angle when you clench
Your jaw width increased over the years rather than always being there
You want lower-face definition without filler or surgery
Round face shape: masseter reduction is one of the few non-surgical treatments that meaningfully changes lower-face width. For patients whose roundness comes from muscle rather than fat or bone, the shift toward an oval outline is the single biggest contour change available without surgery.
What it won't do: it doesn't tighten skin, remove submental fat, or alter your jawbone. If laxity or fullness under the chin is your main concern, masseter Botox isn't the answer and we'll say so.
For men: treatment is dosed to reduce excess bulk while preserving a defined, masculine jaw angle — the goal is a cleaner line, not a narrower face. Men typically require higher unit counts due to greater muscle mass.
Combination approach: masseter reduction pairs naturally with chin filler for patients wanting full lower-face balance — narrowing the sides while adding definition and projection at the front. See our facial balancing page.
Results compound. Your second and third rounds produce more slimming than the first, as the muscle spends longer without full-strength use. Many patients find they need fewer units over time.
02
Therapeutic Goal

TMJ, Grinding & Clenching Relief

A masseter that can't contract at full strength cannot generate the force behind grinding and clenching. For patients living with bruxism or TMJ symptoms, that reduction in force is what breaks the cycle — less clenching means less muscle soreness, fewer tension headaches, and less strain on the joint itself.

Relief typically arrives within two to four weeks — considerably faster than the aesthetic change.

You might be a candidate if
You wake up with a sore, tight, or tired jaw
You've been told you grind your teeth at night
You get tension headaches starting at the temples or jaw
You've cracked or worn through night guards
What it helps: nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism), daytime clenching, morning jaw stiffness and soreness, tension headaches driven by jaw overuse, jaw fatigue while eating, and neck tension referred from the jaw.
What it does not replace: masseter Botox treats the muscular component of TMJ disorder. It does not address structural joint damage, bite alignment problems, or dental issues. It works alongside dental treatment and night guards — it isn't a substitute for them.
Product choice matters more here: we typically prefer Daxxify for therapeutic cases — it spreads less, so we can concentrate the effect in the masseter, and its 5–6 month duration means fewer treatment cycles for a condition you're managing long-term.
Insurance may apply. Therapeutic use for documented TMJ disorder is covered by some PPO plans — the relevant CPT code is 64616. We don't bill insurance directly, but we can provide a superbill for reimbursement. Details in the pricing section below.
Treating TMJ specifically? Our TMJ Botox page covers symptoms, insurance requirements, and medical oversight in full detail.

You don't have to choose. The same injection produces both outcomes — which is why masseter Botox is one of the few treatments where patients routinely report looking better and feeling better from a single appointment. Tell your injector which goal matters most to you and dosing can be weighted accordingly, but in practice most patients end up grateful for both.

Will Masseter Botox Cause Jowls?
The Concern Everyone Has

Will Masseter Botox Cause Jowls? The Honest Answer

"This is the number one question we receive about masseter Botox — and it deserves a real answer, not reassurance."

The concern isn't imaginary. The masseter provides a degree of structural support to the soft tissue lying over it. When a large muscle is reduced substantially and quickly, the skin and fat above it can end up with less underlying volume to drape across — and in the wrong patient, that can read as slight looseness along the jawline.

But the framing you'll find in most "masseter Botox gone wrong" content is misleading. This is not a common outcome, and it is not what happens to a typical patient. It's a risk concentrated in a specific population, driven almost entirely by two things: who was treated, and how aggressively.

Skin elasticity is the deciding variable. Younger patients with good elasticity and healthy facial volume very rarely experience this — their skin retracts as the muscle reduces. Patients with meaningful volume loss and reduced elasticity are the ones where aggressive masseter reduction can produce an unwanted result. That distinction is the entire job of a proper assessment.

Low Risk
Most Patients
Good skin elasticity — skin retracts naturally as the muscle reduces
Healthy midface volume — the surrounding structure supports the tissue
Genuine muscle hypertrophy — there's excess bulk to remove, so reduction restores proportion rather than creating a deficit
Conservative, staged dosing — reduction happens gradually enough that skin adapts alongside it
Higher Risk — Requires Care
Where We Slow Down
Reduced skin elasticity — typically with age, sun history, or significant weight change
Existing volume loss in the midface or along the jawline
Early laxity already present before treatment
Minimal actual muscle bulk — reducing a masseter that isn't enlarged removes support without delivering slimming
How We Prevent It
Three things that separate a good masseter result from a bad one
01

Full Facial Assessment

We don't evaluate the masseter in isolation. Before recommending treatment we assess skin elasticity, midface volume, existing jawline definition, and overall facial proportion — because the same dose that produces a beautiful result on one face produces the wrong result on another.

02

Conservative, Staged Dosing

We start at the lower end of the range and build across treatments rather than maximizing the first session. Gradual reduction gives the overlying skin time to adapt — and it's far easier to add units at your next visit than to wait out an over-reduced muscle.

03

Honest Candidacy Screening

If your anatomy suggests the aesthetic result won't justify the risk, we'll tell you — and often suggest a better path, whether that's treating for therapeutic relief only, or addressing volume and definition with filler instead.

The Other Common Worry

Will Masseter Botox Change My Smile?

No — not when it's placed correctly. The masseter is a chewing muscle. It has no role in lip movement or smiling; those are governed by an entirely separate group of muscles higher in the face, including the zygomaticus major and risorius.

A smile change after masseter treatment means product reached muscles it was never meant to touch — which comes down to injection depth and placement, not the treatment itself. Product placed deep into the belly of the masseter, away from its upper anterior border, stays where it belongs. This is also part of why we favour Daxxify here: it spreads less than Dysport, giving us more control over exactly where the effect stays.

"Our goal is always a result that looks balanced and natural — and being honest about who shouldn't be treated is part of how we get there."

Where the Change Actually Shows

Front-facing photos make masseter results easiest to read, because the change is horizontal. Look at the widest point of the lower face — the angle of the jaw, roughly level with the earlobe. That's where the muscle sits, and that's where the narrowing happens.

Notice what doesn't change: the chin, the cheekbones, and the smile are all untouched. Only the width at the jaw angle shifts — which is exactly what a correctly placed masseter treatment should do.

What Patients Tell Us

"First morning in two years without jaw pain."

Therapeutic Result

"I stopped cracking my third night guard."

Bruxism Relief

"My tension headaches went from daily to almost never."

Headache Relief

Individual results vary. How much slimming you see depends on how much of your jaw width is muscle versus bone, your starting muscle mass, and how many treatment rounds you've had — results build over the second and third rounds. No photo on this page has been retouched, filtered, or altered. Therapeutic relief from grinding and clenching is far more predictable than the degree of visible slimming, which is why we assess both honestly before treating.

Unit count depends on muscle size, strength, and treatment history — men typically require higher counts. We usually start at the conservative end and build across treatments rather than maximizing the first session.

A Note on Product Cost

Botox, Dysport, and Daxxify are all the same per-unit rate here. Daxxify typically requires somewhat more units than Dysport for equivalent effect — but it also lasts 5–6 months instead of 3–4. For a muscle you're managing long-term, that often works out to fewer appointments per year and comparable annual cost. Your injector will walk through the tradeoff at your assessment rather than defaulting to one product.

Insurance Coverage

Is Masseter Botox Covered by Insurance?

For cosmetic jaw slimming, no — aesthetic treatment isn't covered by any plan. For documented therapeutic use, sometimes. Some PPO plans cover neurotoxin for TMJ disorder or bruxism when there's a formal diagnosis and a record of conservative treatments that didn't resolve it.

The relevant billing code to reference when you call your insurer:

CPT Code 64616
A-Class does not bill insurance directly. You pay at the time of treatment and we provide a superbill — an itemized receipt with the CPT code and diagnosis information — which you submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
Call your insurer before your appointment and ask specifically: "Do you cover CPT 64616, chemodenervation of muscle, for TMJ disorder or bruxism?" Getting that answer in advance prevents surprises.
Most plans that cover it require documentation of a formal diagnosis and evidence that conservative treatments — a night guard, physical therapy — were tried without adequate relief. A referral or notes from your dentist or physician strengthen the claim considerably.
Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna are among the carriers that may cover therapeutic neurotoxin, though coverage varies significantly by individual plan. Verify with your own policy rather than assuming.
Prior authorization is commonly required. If your plan requires it, that process needs to be completed before treatment — reimbursement is unlikely to be approved retroactively.
Treatment here is performed under medical oversight — by a Registered Nurse under Dr. Dave Christianson, our Medical Director. That means documented treatment records and a properly itemized superbill, which is what an insurer will want to see. Our TMJ Botox page covers the therapeutic side and the reimbursement process in more depth.

Masseter Botox — What to Expect & Aftercare
Your Appointment

What to Expect Before, During & After Treatment

A masseter appointment takes about 20 minutes — assessment, palpation, and mapping account for most of it. The injections themselves take 10–15 minutes for both sides, and there's no downtime.

Phase One
Before Your Appointment

Avoid blood thinners and alcohol for 48 hours to reduce bruising. Come prepared to clench and release repeatedly — that's how we map the muscle.

Avoid blood thinners for 48 hours — Aspirin, Ibuprofen/Advil, Fish Oil, Vitamin E, and Turmeric all increase bruising risk.
Skip alcohol for 24–48 hours — it dilates blood vessels and is one of the most common reasons patients bruise.
Take a front-facing photo before you come in. Masseter changes are gradual and horizontal — most patients genuinely can't tell how much narrowing happened without a baseline to compare against.
Bring your history. If you've had masseter treatment before, tell us the product, unit count, and how long it lasted. It meaningfully changes our starting dose.
Timing around events: unlike facial areas, masseter results take 8–12 weeks. If you're targeting a wedding or photos, book at least three months ahead.
Phase Two
At Your Appointment

Palpation and mapping first, then 4–6 injection points per side. No numbing is used for masseter — the injections are deep but quick, and most patients tolerate them very well.

Palpation and mapping. Your injector has you clench so the masseter becomes visible and firm, then marks its borders. Muscle size and shape vary considerably — this is why templated dosing doesn't work here.
You'll get the unit count and total before anything is placed — including our reasoning for that number, and no obligation to proceed.
No lidocaine or numbing cream is used for masseter treatment. The injections go deep into muscle rather than superficial tissue, and most patients describe them as a firm pressure rather than a sharp pinch.
4–6 points per side, both sides treated. Product is placed into the belly of the muscle, deliberately away from the upper border where the smile muscles sit.
Total chair time is about 10–15 minutes for the injections. You can drive yourself home and return to work immediately.
Phase Three
Aftercare

Stay upright for 4 hours, skip the gym today, and avoid hard or chewy foods for 24 hours. Don't rub or massage the jaw area for two weeks.

Remain upright for 4 hours — no lying flat or face-down napping. This keeps the product in the muscle where it was placed.
Avoid hard or chewy foods for 24 hours — steak, bagels, tough jerky, hard candy, gum. Heavy chewing immediately after treatment can encourage the product to spread beyond the target.
No strenuous exercise for the rest of the day — elevated blood flow and heat can affect product placement before it binds.
Do not rub, massage, or apply pressure to the jaw for 2 weeks — including facials, dental work where possible, and sleeping hard on one side.
Mild soreness when chewing for a few days is normal — the muscle has just been injected. Small temporary bumps at the injection sites settle within 20–30 minutes.
Arnica is recommended if you bruise easily. Bruising here is uncommon but possible given the injection depth.
Masseter-Specific — Expect This
Chewing Fatigue in Weeks 2–6

As the masseter weakens, many patients notice their jaw tires faster with tough foods — steak, raw carrots, chewy bread, gum. This is not a complication. It's the treatment working: the muscle genuinely has less strength available, which is exactly what stops the grinding.

It's most noticeable around weeks 2–6 and eases as you adapt. Softer foods during that stretch help. If chewing normal meals becomes genuinely difficult rather than just tiring, tell us — that suggests the dose ran high for your muscle, and we'd adjust at your next round.

The Long Game
Why Round Two Matters

Your first masseter treatment is the beginning, not the whole result. The muscle reduces most in the second and third rounds, because it spends progressively longer without full-strength use — the change compounds rather than resetting.

We assess at your next appointment and adjust: some patients need more units, many need fewer over time as the muscle's overuse pattern breaks. Retreat at 3–4 months with Botox or Dysport, 5–6 months with Daxxify.

Masseter Botox FAQ New Berlin WI
FAQ

Masseter Botox FAQ New Berlin & Milwaukee, WI

Masseter Botox is a neurotoxin treatment that relaxes the masseter — the large chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. With less force available to contract, the muscle gradually reduces in size the way any under-used muscle does.

That single mechanism produces two results at once: a slimmer, softer jawline and meaningful relief from teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and TMJ symptoms. At A-Class Aesthetics in New Berlin, treatment typically uses 20–40 units per side, with both sides treated in the same appointment.

Botox and Dysport last 3–4 months in the masseter. Daxxify lasts 5–6 months. The masseter is a powerful, constantly-used muscle, so it metabolizes product somewhat faster than smaller facial muscles.

The slimming effect outlasts the muscle relaxation — the muscle doesn't rebuild to its previous size the moment the product wears off. Patients who treat consistently often find they need fewer units over time, since the overuse pattern that built the muscle has been interrupted.

20–40 units per side is the typical range — so 40–80 units total, since both sides are treated in the same appointment. The count depends on how large and strong your masseter is, and men usually require more due to greater muscle mass.

We generally start at the conservative end and build across treatments rather than maximizing the first session. Your injector palpates the muscle while you clench, determines the count your anatomy needs, and gives you the total before any product is placed.

For most patients, no — but the concern isn't imaginary, and it deserves a real answer. The masseter provides some structural support to the tissue above it. If a muscle is reduced substantially and quickly in a patient who already has reduced skin elasticity or volume loss, that can read as slight looseness along the jawline.

It is not what happens to a typical patient. Younger patients with good elasticity very rarely experience it — their skin retracts as the muscle reduces. The risk comes down to two things: who was treated, and how aggressively. We assess skin elasticity and midface volume before recommending treatment, dose conservatively, and will tell you honestly if your anatomy suggests the aesthetic result won't justify the risk.

No — not when it's placed correctly. The masseter is a chewing muscle with no role in smiling or lip movement. Those are governed by an entirely separate group higher in the face, including the zygomaticus major and risorius.

A smile change after masseter treatment means product reached muscles it was never meant to touch, which comes down to injection depth and placement. Product placed deep into the belly of the masseter, away from its upper anterior border, stays where it belongs. This is part of why we favour Daxxify here — it spreads less than Dysport, giving more control over where the effect stays.

Slimming is gradual because you're waiting on actual muscle volume reduction, not a surface effect. First visible narrowing appears around weeks 4–6, with the full result at weeks 8–12.

Muscle relaxation happens much sooner — grinding and clenching relief typically arrives within 2–4 weeks. If you're targeting an event, book at least three months ahead, and take a front-facing photo before your appointment so you have a baseline to compare against.

Yes — this is one of its most reliable benefits. A masseter that can't contract at full strength cannot generate the force behind grinding and clenching. Patients typically report relief within 2–4 weeks: less morning jaw soreness, fewer tension headaches, and reduced wear on teeth and night guards.

Important limitation: masseter Botox treats the muscular component. It does not address structural joint damage or bite alignment, and it isn't a substitute for dental treatment or a night guard — it works alongside them. If TMJ is your primary concern, our TMJ Botox page covers it in full detail.

For cosmetic jaw slimming, no. For documented therapeutic use — TMJ disorder or bruxism — some PPO plans do cover it. The relevant billing code is CPT 64616 (chemodenervation of muscle).

A-Class does not bill insurance directly. You pay at the time of treatment and we provide a superbill to submit for reimbursement. Call your insurer beforehand and ask specifically whether they cover CPT 64616 for TMJ or bruxism — most plans that do require a formal diagnosis, evidence that conservative treatment didn't resolve it, and often prior authorization.

Most patients tolerate it very well. No numbing cream or lidocaine is used for masseter treatment — the injections go deep into muscle rather than superficial tissue, and patients typically describe them as a firm pressure rather than a sharp pinch.

There are 4–6 injection points per side and the whole thing takes 10–15 minutes. Mild soreness when chewing for a few days afterward is normal and expected — the muscle has just been injected.

Retreat every 3–4 months with Botox or Dysport, or 5–6 months with Daxxify. Longer intervals are one of the main reasons we often prefer Daxxify for the masseter — fewer appointments for a muscle you're managing long-term.

Your second and third rounds produce more slimming than the first, because the muscle spends progressively longer without full-strength use. Many patients find they eventually need fewer units and can space treatments further apart.

No — neurotoxin is temporary by nature. If you stop treating, the muscle gradually regains full strength and will rebuild over time, particularly if the grinding or clenching that enlarged it returns.

That said, the change doesn't reverse the instant the product wears off. Muscle takes time to rebuild, and patients who've treated consistently for a few rounds often find the result holds longer between appointments. The temporary nature is also genuinely reassuring — if a result isn't what you wanted, it's a waiting problem rather than a permanent one.

Yes — but avoid hard or chewy foods for 24 hours. Steak, bagels, tough jerky, hard candy, and gum are the ones to skip. Heavy chewing right after treatment can encourage the product to spread beyond where it was placed. Soft foods are completely fine immediately.

Separately, expect some chewing fatigue during weeks 2–6 — your jaw will tire faster with tough foods as the muscle weakens. This is the treatment working, not a complication. It eases as you adapt. If chewing normal meals becomes genuinely difficult rather than just tiring, tell us — that suggests the dose ran high for your muscle.

It can — if the roundness comes from muscle rather than fat or bone. For patients whose lower-face width is driven by an enlarged masseter, reduction shifts the outline toward a softer oval or heart shape. It's one of the few non-surgical treatments that meaningfully changes lower-face width.

It won't help if your face shape comes from a wide bony structure, submental fullness, or overall facial fat distribution — masseter Botox slims muscle only. Your injector palpates the muscle while you clench and release: one that visibly bulges and feels dense responds well; one that barely changes indicates the width is structural. We'll tell you honestly which you are.
